This desert region often served as a substitute for the American West in "Spaghetti Western" cinema that emerged in Europe in the mid 1960’s. Three former film studios remain in the Tabernas Desert. In addition to photographing these sets and various locations used for films across Almeria, I went into bars, brothels, and beyond making photographs evocative of a modern-day western. On the farm in Russell County that has been in my maternal family for five generations, Big Creek runs through the landscape, a constant reminder of the continuity of time. Here my cousin Eric, his wife Lisa, their two sons and six daughters reside, re-inhabiting a land first homesteaded by our kin at the opening of the frontier. Though evoking the powerful icon of the falls, these murals, concentrated in an eighteen-mile radius of the precipice, also communicate the deterioration and loss of the communities struggling in a post-industrial economy. As one nears the natural wonder, the representations increasingly deteriorate in the depopulated urban core.
