My hometown of Great Bend, Kansas resides along the historic Santa Fe Trail. Near the small town indentations in the land made by passing wagons are still visible. Shadow Root is an ephemeral installation created in response to standing in these recesses of earth. The ruts, a physical resonance of westward expansionism, provide the starting point for an artwork contemplating time and place. The installation offers an autobiographical experience with, and a shared historical connection to, the land and its history.     2009
